The aim of sedation is to calm the patient and reduce pain. The type of sedation required depends on the length and complexity of the procedure, as well as the patient’s overall health. What is sedation dentistry?
Sedation dentistry is a field in dentistry that uses medications to help patients relax during dental procedures. It is particularly beneficial for individuals who have anxiety, fear, or discomfort related to dental treatments. Dentists can use sedation for various procedures, from routine cleanings to more complicated, intricate surgeries.
Types of sedation dentistry
Sedation: Analgesia, Amnesia, and Relaxation. Sedation (according to the AAP) is defined as a state in which the patient is capable of being aroused (but is not aroused) and is at least as relaxed as the patient would be if he or she were awake. This is often achieved through the use of nitrous oxide, which is inhaled (and which the AAP does not consider a general anesthetic). Patients may slur their words and not remember much of the procedure when moderate sedation is used. Oral sedatives or IV sedation can be used.
Deep Sedation: Patients hover near consciousness but can be roused. This is usually accomplished with IV meds.
Total Anesthesia: The patient is entirely unconscious and has no awareness of their surroundings. This is primarily used in extensive surgical procedures, not for cases requiring special anesthesia.
